Every four years the summer Olympics capture our time, minds and imagination, An international and time-honored ritual that grabs our collective attention – the Paris games are all that and more. This year is impossibly thrilling. I find myself captivated – it is equal parts Paris, record breaking, hometown heroes and sheer fortitude. Athletes are deeply invested and those who have gone before, women like ALLYSON FELIX have redefined the experience though creating the first ever OLYMPIC VILLAGE NURSERY, this based on this missing elements of her experience as an athlete with children, paying it forward in remarkable ways.
The Paris games show much power and grace under pressure. With all eyes on them, resilient and deeply committed women are setting new standards. Sound ever-so slightly familiar? While breastfeeding does not offer any medals – it could.
I say, why not?
The is a collective award to be handed out to those who overcome the obstacles of breastfeeding, Mothers who, though their will and the essential support of others, find their way to a successful breastfeeding experience, regardless of how they define success.
And this does not come without challenges that are met and overcome through the support of others. Let’s take a minute to award those who shifted the landscape of breastfeeding through their vision and will.
National Breastfeeding week is August 1-7. The World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA) selects a new subject for World Breastfeeding Day each year. This year’s theme is “Closing the gap: Breastfeeding support for all.” And so, the It’s Working Project will spend the month celebrating some of the women who have redefined the whole of the breastfeeding ecosystem through a uniquely experience driven lens. Prepare to be inspired!
